We have had this book for a while and would really like to know more about it before putting it into the shop.
The author was an Armenian Soviet choreographer called Srbui Lisician. The title translates as ‘Dances Movement Record (kinetography)’ and it was produced under the editorship of the Chief Ballet Master of the State Academic Bolshoi Theatre, Mr R. V. Zakharov . The book was published in 1940 by the publishing House ‘ISKUSSTVO’ (Art) Moscow – Leningrad.
Basically it appears to be a manual for anyone creating dances for ballet or folk performances. It is written in Russian and every page has numerous diagrams and figurative explanations of a notation for dance movements. Is this the same as Laban’s notation? Did Lisician and Laban know each other? Did they influence each other?
On the title page is the owner’s stamp: an oval with the name Manuel Frenkel, Musicians Union and the initials A.C.C.S. Is this the same person as Manuel Frankel, Russian-born composer and teacher at the Royal Academy of Music in the 1950s? Was he the composer of ‘A Sea Picture for Piano Solo’ in 1941?
As you might have gathered, this isn’t my area of expertise and I can’t read or speak Russian. There seems to be little written in English about Srbui Lisician on the internet. Can you help Oxfam here?
Manuel Frenkel was my father. He subsequently changed his name to Manuel Frankell. He was indeed the same person as the Russian-born composer at the RAM in the 1950s. He died in 1963. I don’t know anything about the choreographer. If you still have the book I would be interested in purchasing it.
We do still have the book. I’m so pleased you found my blog!
I’ll be in touch again tomorrow.
